Red Deer Chantry:
As you are all aware, Halloween Night, is the night of Palle Grande is nigh upon us. Normally, this would be a night of festivities for the Sabbat, but, they are planning their attack on the city.
October 31 will see Calgary nearly emptied of Sabbat at they attack Red Deer.
You should have noticed that I have emptied the Chantry of any and all items of interest, including the library and lab.
Apprentice TORRENS, you shall be responsible for removing any and all Wards from the Chantry. I want this building to be completely devoid of Tremere presence, or any indications that we will be returning.
All members shall attend the Elysium site that evening, this includes those members that do not usually attend these functions. Apprentice Sophia and Apprentice this is directed at you.
All members shall be girded for battle. It WILL happen. I am fully aware that most members here are not battle-hardened warriors. Yet, everyone will acquit themselves. Cowardice will NOT be tolerated.
Apprentice ORSINI you shall be responsible for ensuring that the Elysium site is prepared.
All members shall be ensuring that the Elysium site is Warded properly.
I have prepared a Mirror Walk that shall be placed within the Elysium. The exit end of this shall be placed at an advantageous position should an exit from Elysium be required.
Apprentice WORTHINGTON, I am not sure if you are going to be here or not. Please advise so that we can plan accordingly.
If anyone has any questions, let me know.

My lord Regent:
I am now able to place Warding Circles and will place them in appropriate places as required that evening.
(NB: So, OOC I have a few questions. The ritual description states
"This circle has a diameter of up to one step for each dot of the Occult skill that you possess."
Question 1: Are these normal, actual steps or combat steps? I have Occult 5 so either way fairly sizable I guess, but I remember Elder Driscoll mentioning something to the effect of two combat steps being like almost the entire length of the basement there in the hall, so if this is the case then these are massive and one circle will probably cover the entire building. The reason I ask is because I was wondering if these will be overt preparations that the rest of the court knows about or not. If they are not to know, then these circles will definitely be an issue as no one will be able to enter the building to play without taking damage and it will be a rather uneventful evening as we sit inside the building while everyone else plays out on the street. They can all be included if they are present at the time of creation and each contribute 1 blood to the circle, which we Tremere are all going to have to do either way. So if this is public knowledge, this will not be a problem as we can make an announcement and assume OOC that we all get together beforehand or as the game starts to do this. To last the game session, the simple ritual only requires five minutes so I don't think that will be a problem throwing them up as needed. I assume we do not need the longer version lasting a year and a day.
Question 2: The circle does 3 aggravated damage to anyone not attuned to it. The default covers partial supernaturals so that should cover any possible ghouls or mortals with supernatural blood. My primary Path is 3 dots so my circles will also cover vampires, werewolves, and fae. My question is does the circle continue to inflict damage if they remain within it? The description states that
"Warding Circles cannot inflict damage on a character more than once per turn."
so does that mean if they remain in the circle after taking the initial hit they will take another on the next turn? That would be significant as we could essentially kill anyone in three turns or so if we can keep them occupied or restrained somehow within the circle. Something to keep in mind.
Finally, I had an unrelated question regarding Mirror Walk. It states that only the thaumaturge who created it can use it, with one possible willing passenger and then it takes ten minutes before additional use. So how does that benefit anyone apart from yourself and your favourite apprentice? Unless you are coming back for additional trips provided we can keep the mirror on our end from being shattered, that is.)

The biggest thing to remember about the game (the way I play it) and, fortunately, the way that Serge plays it (Serge pipe in here if I am wrong), is...what benefits the story. The rules are meant to facilitate the story not hamper it.
Consequently, Rituals may not work exactly the same every time, they are dependent on what story is being told.
In this case, the diameter of the Ward is linked more to what is required that night. If Serge wants the Elysium Warded, it will be Warded, if he wants the Sabbat to get through, they will. Yes, if you can keep the Lick in the Ward, they take continuous damage.
The same holds true for the Mirror Walk...it will work properly if it helps tell the dramatic story of non-combat Kindred escaping for their very unlives while the blood thirsty Sabbat come screaming through the door...or the battle-weary and hard pressed Kindred of Red Deer are being overwhelmed and use the Mirror to transport across the street to hit the unprotected flank of the attacking Sabbat...however, if they try to use it to go to the 7-11 for a slurpee, it may not work. Strict adherence to the rules is more important for PC vs PC then PC vs NPC. Initially, Kaspar brought the Mirror into the Chantry to assist in moving all of the books and equipment to Edmonton. It wasn't until I spoke with Serge about the logistics of the game on Halloween (multiple battle locations...Elysium, Chantry, around town, other places)...that we both felt it better (although he left the final decision with Kaspar) that the Tremere are at the Elysium (yes, the Elysium is better fortified and could probably be held better, but this gets us in with all the other PCs...it tells a better story). As such, the Mirror was brought as well and can be used to help...what form that help takes remains to be seen.
Shane's comment about "combat steps" was more a referral to the propensity of players to take a step and then shuffle shuffle to get closer to the combat. It is cheating but wink wink nudge nudge cheating.
Hope that helps.
