Chris will have a better description and example of how his Dark Ages (more Middle Ages) the game is structured. But I have thrown together a basic example.
There are several Dukedoms. Each Dukedom is basically a domain on its own and corresponds to a physical territory controlled by those sworn to the Duke. A Duke is sort of like a Petty Prince that holds ultimate authority in his Domain but still answers to and owes fealty to the Ard Rhi (High King).
Each Domain is basically a coterie of Players. You will be able to pick a small group (5-6 players on average) and form your own domain (Dukedom). Within the structure you will need to decide who is in what position. Only High Clans can be Dukes or Barons but Low Clans can be knights. If you are unsure or do not care what players you form a Domain with you can put a character concept up on the new board and either chat with others and build some common ties or Chris will match you up with others.
There will be multiple Domains/Dukedoms that may be at odds with each other or may decide to work together (all decided by you and how you react to the story).
There is a Ard Rhi (high king/imperial prince...) that the Dukes are sworn in fealty to. There are two positions for players outside the Dukedoms or Free City. That is the Reeve (sheriff) and Chamberlain (Harpy). Both of these would require a good story and request to Chris and his approval to be assigned to one as ultimately they serve the Ard Rhi (NPC).
Lastly there is the City State/Free City. It is controlled and run by the Low Clans. The most independent a Low Clan can be. Consider this like another Dukedom only it is extremely unlikely a High Clan will be there. The Doge (leader) is sworn directly to the Ard Rhi like Duke. They are basically allowed to exist and are not wiped out because there are certain benefits that ONLY the Freeman or Doge can offer.
