There are certain Merits that should be awarded, after character creation, and not counted towards the max level, if they are gained through RP / DT Actions
- Golconda Seeker - Get it for free if that is your character's focus
- Infernal Power - Get it for free if you make the deal
- Necromantic Training - Get it for free (pay out of clan for the Discipline) if you put the DTs into it
- Paths of Enlightenment - Free if you find a teacher
- Reputation - If you work at it, it should be free
- Skill Aptitude - Should be purchaseable multiple times, if you are willing to pay the xp costs for the Merit AND the skill
- Thaumaturgic Training - Get it for free (pay out of clan for the Discipline) if you put the DTs into it
- Antiquities - If you now own an Antique store or similar, it would make sense to be able to purchase it.
There are others that also make sense if you put the time and effort into it and there are good story reasons for it
- If Jack wanted to purchase Rugged, he has been through a number of "possessions" that have affected his body so should be more Rugged, if he wanted that Merit
- Wolfgang, should now have "Prestigious Sire" now that his Sire is a Justicar
According to the book, the only way to increase the Merits is to lose an existing one. This does not make sense. Perhaps, having the player pay double cost would make sense as this would open the door to abuse (everyone saying "hey I fed on a dog, so can I take Efficient Digestion"), but a player that is maxed out in Merits, should not have to drop all of them just to buy Golconda Seeker. A player that has spent a year trying to wrest Thaumaturgy from dusty tomes should not have to drop everything to get Thaumaturgic Training. Story should never take a backseat to rules.
Just a thought and throwing it out there.
