Vampire is like a social version of a full contact sport.
Characters are going to get hurt. Plans are going to fail. Innocent kindred will be punished. Guilty kindred will prosper from their evil deeds. This is the nature of the game, and the only way I could "nerf" it is to take away the freedom of PCs to act against each other - which defeats the whole point of roleplaying Vampires in the World of Darkness.
Instead I strive to always give every character a way to succeed. It may not be easy to overcome the obstacles thrown at your character or to figure out the puzzles and intrigues of the court and its enemies, but if everything came easy then achievements wouldn't count for much and the game would become boring. If the game is getting frustrating for you then come and talk to me. I want everyone to have fun. If I didn't then I wouldn't spend 30+ hours every month maintaining the boards and hosting the games so that we can all become immersed in this LARP.
